Active Sunderland is here to help everyone move more and feel better. Our vision is simple: “All Together an Active Sunderland – a city where everyone can be as active as they can be.”
We work with local partners such as sports clubs, community centres and leisure centres to make being active easy and enjoyable. This means improving access to sports, leisure facilities, and our beautiful green and blue spaces.
Our goals are to:
- Reach as many people as possible, including children and adults.
- Give children and young people the best start in life by building healthy habits.
- Support families and communities who are least active.
- Make sure everyone can use Sunderland’s parks, waterways, and sports facilities.
The benefits of being more physically active go far beyond fitness and include:

We run exciting BIG events as well as initiatives such as the Sunderland Weight Management Programme, Healthy Lifestyles Programme and weekly walking programme to inspire people to move more.

Tennis
Sunderland City Council, in partnership with the Lawn Tennis Association, has upgraded and improved tennis courts in seven parks across the city, making it easier than ever to enjoy a game of tennis. Playing tennis boosts fitness, improves coordination, and strengthens muscles while offering a fun way to stay active. It also reduces stress, sharpens focus, and provides social interaction, making it great for both body and mind. Find out more

Now is the perfect time to give rugby a go – even if you’ve never played before. We’re working with local rugby clubs to make rugby fun and easy for everyone. Change the Game-Southwick has helped many people to step up and become more active. We welcome anyone 16+ living and working in Southwick to our activities. It's very simple, you can turn up alone or with a friend and, you will be made to feel very welcome by our instructors. Find out more
