Gambling is addictive and can turn harmful, impacting many facets of a person’s health, relationships and finances. In 2020/21, the North East had the highest prevalence of at-risk gamblers in England (4.9%).

Brief interventions are short, empathetic and structured conversations that seek in a non-confrontational way to motivate and support people to think about and/or plan a change in their gambling behaviour.

The training is intended to provide the minimum level of knowledge and skill needed to identify risk confidently and effectively, provide brief advice and signpost to local services.

Our courses cover the following information:

  • Gain an understanding about the Making Every Contact Count (MECC) way of working and how to incorporate it into your practice
  • Have a greater understanding around gambling and gambling related harms
  • Gain understanding around gambling and women
  • Understanding of gambling and its impacts on the female brain
  • Gain understanding of gambling related harms
  • Gain an understanding of gambling related harms as an affected other and being female
  • Gain an understanding of what constitutes a brief intervention
  • Understanding of reduction strategies to use within gambling related harms
  • Have a greater understanding of the referral pathways into services for both the person who is gambling as well as the affected other
  • Free to participate

What clients say about our service

This programme really helped me to have difficult conversations to influence positive behaviour change. My friend has now reduced her weekly alcohol units from 32 to 10
