Health Champions – Alcohol Brief Intervention Training

What is MECC Alcohol Brief Intervention Training?

Alcohol misuse is one of the most significant risk factors contributing to ill health. Sunderland has some of the worst health outcomes relating to alcohol in England.

Brief intervention training is a method of discussing how someone can reduce alcohol intake in a positive, non-confrontational way and how their health could benefit from making changes.

The training is intended to provide the minimum level of knowledge and skill needed to confidently and effectively identify risk, provide brief advice, and signpost to local services.

Objectives

  • Consider attitudes to alcohol and how they may impact on delivering ABI’s.
  • Outline the harm caused by alcohol.
  • Explore levels and patterns of alcohol consumption using a screening tool.
  • Understand the basic principles of discussing changes to behaviour with individuals in a motivational way.
