At Theatre Space North East (TSNE), our vision is to encourage full participation in the arts with an ethos of “arts for everyone”.  We specialise in engaging those least likely to visit theatres, museums and galleries by taking our work into non-traditional spaces, with the belief that “any space can be a theatre space”.

Operating since 2012, we have produced a series of high quality, mid-scale theatre products in non-traditional spaces. To date audience figures total 33k over 45 productions including our signature “Summer of Shakespeare” (formerly Plays in the Park) series, showcasing Shakespeare and original scripts of stories such as George and the Dragon and Robin Hood by local writers. Typically our work touches audiences from all walks of life, who feel art is beyond their budget or “not for them” by enabling them to stumble upon our work in the least likely of places.  Regularly our audience numbers swell as we walk through the park, telling tales of Shakespeare or Robin Hood, engaging people as we go.  Our work also attracts families who due to social constraints find it difficult to attend traditional arts spaces, including a regular family with a disabled child who can clap and sing along with the cast without disturbing other audience members. To ensure affordability, audiences contribute to the shows through a “Pay as you feel” approach contributing as little or as much as they can afford. We firmly believe that money should not be a barrier to access.
