Sunderland Young Peoples Bike Project

179 Newcastle Road, Sunderland SR5 1JN

Established in 2009, we are a community-based cycle project. Our aim is to inspire individuals through a variety of cycling activities and services, including learning and development sessions, young people and adult training, SEND and inclusive cycling, cycle led rides, road safety sessions, maintenance classes and Dr Bike events. Overall, we aim, to promote health and fitness, reduce social isolation, improve mental health and wellbeing, while giving people the opportunity to learn new skills, gain confidence and help reduce the carbon footprint, while keeping people active.

Based in Thompson Park, Southwick, Sunderland, we have a purpose-built cycle workshop fully equipped to teach, service and repair bikes. In July 2022 we worked in partnership with Sunderland North Area committee and British Cycling to have a purpose-built cycling skills area in the park, to teach those wanting to learn to ride or improve basic skills and confidence. We are a unique cycle project in this area with a fleet of cycles fit for all ages and a range of adapted cycles so our sessions are inclusive for people with additional needs and disabilities.

We have qualified cycle mechanics who are experienced in fixing a variety of bikes. We routinely offer a cycle repair service and have successfully hosted many funded and private Dr Bike events within the community and for local businesses.

All of our staff are experienced and highly skilled, they have achieved nationally recognised qualifications and standards through nationally accredited training courses and experience on the job. We adhere to a safe recruitment policy and ensure the induction, motivation, development, training, deployment and discipline of all staff and volunteers. SYPBP are responsible for the provision of training and support of staff, including DBS clearance, Safe Guarding and supporting vulnerable adults.
