Sunderland African Community Alliance (SACA)

Sunderland African Community Alliance (SACA) is a community‑driven organisation dedicated to empowering people of African descent and strengthening their place within the wider Sunderland community. Its work spans cultural celebration, social support, education, health, and community development, all grounded in values of dignity, inclusion, and collective progress.
Who We Serve
SACA supports:
-
People of African heritage living in Sunderland
-
Migrants of African heritage adjusting to life in the UK
-
Families and young people seeking connection, opportunity, and cultural belonging
-
Wider communities interested in intercultural understanding and cohesion
Our Mission
We work to transform the aspirations of local people into meaningful action by fostering unity, collaboration, and shared responsibility. We are committed to strengthening collective effort so communities can shape their own future.
Our Vision
We envisions a community where human suffering is reduced and resilience is strengthened, built on deep connections and mutual support, especially during challenging or uncertain times.
What the organisation stands for
-
Marginalised communities — We understand that many groups, particularly Black and minority ethnic communities, continue to face systemic barriers in areas such as healthcare, employment, education, and civic participation.
-
Removing barriers — We exist to close these gaps by creating fair access to wellbeing, opportunity, and empowerment.
-
Building pathways — Through practical support and community-led initiatives, we help people thrive and participate fully in society.
What We Do
Community Empowerment Pathways
We create opportunities for people to grow, learn, and participate fully in society. Through tailored education, practical training, and confidence‑building activities, individuals gain the tools they need to progress in work, study, and everyday life. This includes language learning, employability support, digital literacy, and personal development programmes that open doors to long‑term success.
Health, Healing & Wellbeing Support
We promote a holistic approach to wellbeing that recognises the physical, emotional, and social needs of the community. Activities include culturally informed health workshops, mental‑health awareness sessions, trauma‑responsive support for those who have faced hardship, and wellbeing groups that encourage resilience, self‑care, and healthier lifestyles.
Food Security & Crisis Support
We operate a community‑focused food bank that provides essential supplies to individuals and families experiencing financial hardship. Alongside emergency food parcels, we offer guidance, signposting, and wrap‑around support to help people stabilise their circumstances and move towards long‑term security.
Digital Inclusion & Technology Skills
We work to close the digital divide by offering accessible digital‑skills training for all ages and abilities. From basic computer use to online safety, job‑search skills, and digital confidence‑building, these sessions ensure that community members can participate fully in an increasingly digital world.
Community Connection & Social Participation
We strengthen community bonds through initiatives that reduce isolation, build confidence, and encourage active participation. Social groups, peer networks, intergenerational activities, and community‑led projects create safe, welcoming spaces where people can meet, share experiences, and support one another.
Cultural Expression & Creative Heritage
At SACA, we celebrate African cultures and promotes intercultural understanding through arts, storytelling, music, dance, and community events. These activities honour identity, preserve heritage, and create opportunities for people from all backgrounds to learn from one another and build shared pride.
Sport, Movement & Active Living
We use sport and recreation as a pathway to health, teamwork, and community cohesion. Activities for children, young people, and adults encourage physical fitness, confidence, and positive relationships, while providing safe spaces for fun, learning, and personal growth.
Equality, Rights & Representation
We advocates for fairness, dignity, and equal opportunity by challenging discrimination and amplifying African and minority voices in local decision‑making. Through community engagement, partnership work, and awareness‑raising, the organisation promotes inclusive policies and ensures that marginalised groups are heard, valued, and represented.
