Inclusive Cycling for All Ages

Gateway Wheelers’ diverse fleet of accessible cycles includes go-karts, trikes, bucket seat bike, wheelchair bike, tandem, KMC trikes, e-trikes and much more. This enables individuals of all ages and abilities to participate in cycling. For many members with long-term disabilities, the charity provides the only opportunity to exercise outdoors, helping combat social isolation, inactivity, and mental health challenges.

Cycling Location

Based in Houghton Rectory Park, Houghton -le-Spring, Sunderland, our members cycle around a traffic free track which includes 2 lanes, a roundabout, T junctions, zebra crossing and traffic calming section.  This allows our members the opportunity to experience riding on roads in a safe environment while being in the fresh air and exercising, for some this is the only exercise they participate in.

Cycling Times

Our 1 hour cycling sessions run 2-3 times on a Monday, Tuesday and Friday, with 1 Sunday session a month.

Creating Positive Impact

  • Accessible Activities: By tailoring cycling opportunities to each individual’s needs, the charity empowers members to enjoy outdoor exercise in a supportive environment.
  • Combatting Isolation: Many participants face barriers to accessing physical activity or social spaces, and Gateway Wheelers offers a vital outlet for connection and recreation.
  • Regular Use: So far this year, Gateway Wheelers’ fleet has been used over 2,000 times, highlighting the importance and demand for the services provided.
