Soundwaves was formed in 1974 and is a registered charity. It is also a member of the Talking News Federation.
Based in Thorney Close it provides a service to people with visual impairment using CD’s, MP3 files and internet downloads which can be played on various machines and computers.
It provides the following programmes:
- Soundwaves monthly magazine
- What’s on
- Information
- Readers letters
- Poetry
- Short stories
- World music
- Nostalgia
- Red and white sound bytes all about Sunderland Association Football Club
- Sunderland Echo – excerpts of Wearside news, births, marriages and obituaries
- Star Series – readings from the Houghton and Seaham, Washington and Peterlee Stars
