Breastfeeding Friendly Workplace

Sunderland City Council is supporting workplaces across the city to become breastfeeding friendly. While Health and Safety legislation states that employers must provide a suitable place for pregnant and breastfeeding workers to rest, this pledge is about going one step further and pledging to provide further support to breastfeeding employees. Take up the offer of a free awareness session to help support pregnant and breastfeeding employees in the workplace.

 What are the benefits?

Whatever your workplace, being breastfeeding friendly has many benefits:

  • Making it easier for breastfeeding employees to return to work
  • Increased staff morale and loyalty, and a subsequently higher rate of return to work
  • Lower recruitment and training costs
  • An extra incentive to offer potential employees
  • Breastfeeding provides lifelong health benefits for both mother and child
  • By helping to make it easier for women to breastfeed, you will be making a positive contribution to the health of people in the community.

Signing up is free.

Your workplace will be asked to meet the requirements of the pledge below and agree to display the Breastfeeding Friendly Workplace logo at your site.

This includes:

  • Knowing that workplace regulations require employers to provide suitable facilities where pregnant and breastfeeding employees can rest

  • Ensuring that the organisation has a breastfeeding policy and all employee’s are aware of the policy
  • Displaying the Breastfeeding Friendly Sunderland Workplace logo in a prominent location, so all employees are aware the workplace is part of the scheme

Your workplace lead will be asked to familiarise themselves with the Health and Safety Executive (HSE) recommendations on breastfeeding, along with the resources provided in the links below.
