Active Sunderland BIG Walk

Join us for the BIG Walk! It’s one of Sunderland’s best outdoor events—and it’s for everyone.
You don’t need to be super fit. Just come along and enjoy a walk in the fresh air. Bring your family, your friends, or just yourself.
We have different routes, so you can go at your own speed. Take your time, enjoy the beautiful surroundings of Herrington Country Park and the River Wear, and feel proud of moving more.
- 3 miles – Perfect for beginners, families, and those with mobility needs. A gentle, accessible* stroll.
- 6 miles – A great choice for those beginners looking for more of a challenge.
- 9 miles – Ideal for regular walkers who want to stretch their legs and take in more of Sunderland’s scenic routes.
- 13 miles – The ultimate challenge for experienced walkers, offering a rewarding trek through stunning countryside surrounding Penshaw Monument and the River Wear.
*Accessible to prams / pushchairs and some wheelchairs, however, please bear in mind the paths in Herrington Country Park are gravel and can be uneven.
