Cold Health Alert issued for the North East

The yellow cold health alert is in effect from 6PM on 17/02/2026 until 6PM on 20/02/2026 across the North East

The yellow alert was triggered due to a forecasted prolonged cold spell, which poses health risks, especially for:

  • People aged 65 and over
  • Those with pre-existing health conditions (respiratory, cardiovascular)
  • Vulnerable groups such as those sleeping rough

UKHSA warned that the cold weather could lead to increased demand on health services, and a rise in risks like heart attacks, strokes, and chest infections. They advised checking on vulnerable individuals and following guidance on staying safe during cold weather.

What Vulnerable People Should Do:

  • Stay Warm Indoors: Heat rooms to at least 18°C, close curtains, wear layers.
  • Keep Active: Move around every hour, light exercise indoors.
  • Eat and Drink Well: Regular hot meals and drinks, avoid alcohol.
  • Check Medications: Ensure prescriptions and emergency contacts are ready.
  • Seek Help: Call NHS 111 or GP if unwell, dial 999 in emergencies.
  • Stay Connected: Ask family/friends to check in, contact local support groups.
