Amber Weather Warning
The UK Health Security Agency (UKHSA) has issued an amber Cold-Health Alert for the North East. This alert is in effect from 8PM on Sunday, 28 December and is now extended until 12PM on Monday, 12 January.
The amber alert was triggered due to a forecasted prolonged cold spell, which poses significant health risks, especially for:
- People aged 65 and over
- Those with pre-existing health conditions (respiratory, cardiovascular)
- Vulnerable groups such as those sleeping rough
UKHSA warned that the cold weather could lead to increased demand on health services, and a rise in risks like heart attacks, strokes, and chest infections. They advised checking on vulnerable individuals and following guidance on staying safe during cold weather.
What Vulnerable People Should Do:
- Stay Warm Indoors: Heat rooms to at least 18°C, close curtains, wear layers.
- Keep Active: Move around every hour, light exercise indoors.
- Eat and Drink Well: Regular hot meals and drinks, avoid alcohol.
- Check Medications: Ensure prescriptions and emergency contacts are ready.
- Seek Help: Call NHS 111 or GP if unwell, dial 999 in emergencies.
- Stay Connected: Ask family/friends to check in, contact local support groups.
